RAILROAD SIGNALS of the U.S.

TRI-LIGHT SIGNALS

This page covers signals nicknamed "tri-lights", otherwise known as color light signals.  I've had several people call me to task on using "tri-lights" for this style, telling me that most signals are tri-lights, but, tri-light in this case refers to the fact that the three lenses are arranged in a triangular fashion.  Most signals are created out of need, but I'm not sure what application these signals filled, unless the few inches in height saved over a standard vertical three color light signal was needed.  In all of the installations I have seen, the height savings was not needed.
